Other Goodbyes

Watercolour, 8 x 10
by Julia Schoennagel
31 July 2014

About this painting: I’ve always loved Claude Detloff’s powerful photograph of the The British Columbia Regiment (Duke of Connaught’s Own Rifles) marching down Eighth Street in 1940, and often thought over the years that someday something special would be made of it. Knowing that this mustering of troops happened in New Westminster somehow brings history to life, making it real, touching us all, because these people lived right here in this small city, and all played no small part in the war. This was not some remote incident happening in a far-off country.

While the Bernard family’s heartache has been forever suspended in time, whenever I look at the photograph I can’t help wondering about the many other soldiers. Who were they? What were their names? Was this the last time they were seen by their loved ones? Did they come home, whole and safe? What happened to their children and pets? And so my painting evolved—the Bernards fade into the background as another wife and daughter and beloved puppy say goodbye to the most important man in their lives.

Love, loss, and loyalty belong to everyone.
